For the past two years, members of United Hebrew Congregation have been engaged in the Indiana Sacred Places initiative funded by Indiana Landmarks and the Lilly Foundation.
This participation has led to an architect’s full assessment that determined our more than 100-year-old building (originally known as Temple Israel) is in need of many urgent repairs to prevent further-weather related damage and ensure its future.
Stained glass windows at risk
For example, the assessment demonstrated how our historic stained glass windows are at risk and detailed the specific repairs required to restore them to their original beauty.
Our synagogue is vital to the Jewish presence in Terre Haute. We are asking for your financial support to help preserve it.
United Hebrew Congregation’s current active membership is small and cannot contribute the more than $1 million in assessed repairs, nor are we able to fund the more than $100,000 essential for immediate, critical repairs.

Your donation will help secure matching grants
Your donation, which will be placed in a dedicated restoration fund, will help secure much-needed matching grants. We hope to achieve our goal to restore this structure for the Jewish community and as a spiritual and cultural center for the Wabash Valley through generous contributions by donors like you, as well as through matching grants.
We ask you to recall your memories of religious school, High Holy Days services, Passover seders and other important milestones celebrated in the Temple.
To members and former members of United Hebrew Congregation, we ask you to recall your memories of religious school, High Holy Days services, Passover seders and other important milestones celebrated in the Temple, such as your Bar or Bat Mitzvah, confirmation or marriage, as well as honoring your dear ones in the Jewish cemetery.
Help secure a bright future for the congregation and its synagogue
Remembering the past, we ask you to be generous and assist in this endeavor to ensure a future where United Hebrew Congregation can continue as a pillar of the Wabash Valley, with our historic synagogue as its home.
