Karl Zucker turns 90, still devoted to family, working for peace and seeking ‘the real truth’

A desire to seek truth, a love of knowledge, devotion to family — these qualities have driven Karl Zucker for the past 90 years and continue to reflect his philosophy of life.

Karl celebrated his 90th birthday on August 27, so it seems fitting that we reacquaint ourselves with someone who has been a part of United Hebrew Congregation since 1964.

Louise and Walter Sommers celebrate 70th wedding anniversary

Louise and Walter Sommers celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary Thursday, March 30, with a quiet dinner at their Westminster Village apartment in Terre Haute.

“It was a cold, snowy day,” Walter says of the couple’s wedding day on March 30, 1947. “Louise’s father invited just about everybody he knew. And after the wedding, we were busy shaking hands for way over an hour. This much I remember.”

Hazel Loewenstein made a Jewish home; played violin for Terre Haute Symphony

Hazel Anderson Loewenstein (1914-1996), was a formidable addition to the Terre Haute community. Born and reared a Mormon in Utah, Hazel converted to Judaism when she married Dr. Werner Loewenstein (1909-1990) in 1941. Whether mobilizing Sisterhood ladies to bake for an oneg or serving as the president of the PTA, Hazel could always be counted on to do more than her share.
