Community programs at United Hebrew Congregation Terre Haute
The first Stained Glass Sunday Afternoon in 13 years drew about 100 people, says Community Preservation Specialist Chris Usler.
Even more encouraging, those visitors came motivated to listen and learn. “I was pleasantly surprised not only that we got the turnout we did but the people who did attend were really interested,” says Usler, based at the Western Regional Office in Terre Haute. “They spent a lot of time trying to learn and understand.”
As part of its promotion for “Stained Glass Sunday Afternoon”, from 1-4 p.m. June 11, Terre Haute Landmarks has included Temple Israel in a limited series of special placemats to be distributed throughout June at local restaurants.
Crowds will return to Temple Israel from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, June 11, when United Hebrew Congregation participates in the annual “Stained Glass Sunday Afternoon” tour sponsored by Indiana Landmarks and Terre Haute Landmarks.
Volunteers will be present at eight historic houses of worship to welcome visitors along the free, self-guided tour. Tour maps will be available at each site.
Sam Richardson, a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Sociology, University of Virginia and primary investigator with The Small Jewish Communities Project, has invited United Hebrew Congregation to participate in a national survey of small Jewish congregations.
