Temple celebrates a busy and productive year, continues to build community

This past year has been a productive one for United Hebrew Congregation. Your board of trustees has worked tirelessly to keep our congregation solid. A big thanks to all of the board.

One big accomplishment has been Phase One of our restoration project. Due to your generosity, donations more than matched the requirement for the grant received. Terry Fear continues to be diligent in seeking other grants to help continue the restoration process. However, we still need funds from you. So, please consider continuing to support this important effort.

We welcomed one new member family — Patricia, John, and baby Robert Sharp. Patricia is Patty Lewis’s granddaughter.

Congregation will hear guest speaker, elect new board members at annual meeting

At 11:30 a.m. May 20, our congregation will hold its annual meeting. This is a time for us to get together and celebrate our accomplishments during the past year.

Most recently, we launched another young adult, Izaak, who became Bar Mitzvah.

I find it remarkable, and I hope that you do, too, that our small Jewish community educates our young people as well as many larger congregations.

At first glance, when reading the title of this column you might have responded as follows:

“Of course not, I am married!”

“Of course not, I am single and have no intention of getting married or getting married again!”

Or, “Of course not, I am in a relationship, but marriage is not in the horizon.”

Yet, “engagement” has a more general meaning. According to the Merriam Webster app on my iPhone, engagement involves an emotional commitment. That means a commitment to a person, place, organization or a myriad of other entities. So why am I writing about engagement? Yes, I have an ulterior motive.

What if Moses could have posted the Exodus on Facebook Live?

Spring is on the way and it’s time to let our minds wander a bit.

Mine was wandering today and all of a sudden I thought, what if our ancestors had used Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat or Instagram to communicate the events that led to Purim and Passover, the holidays we celebrate during the month of March?

Perhaps Vashti would have tweeted #MeToo. Esther might have posted pictures of the banquets on lnstagram, and, certainly Haman’s hanging would have reached Facebook Live.
