Awake and Sing! completed its successful four-day run Saturday afternoon at the New Theater on the Indiana State University campus. And following the friendly opening-night activism of kashrut-sensitive audience members, the play’s final three performances continued with the notable absence of milchig and fleishig!

Awake and Sing! to premiere at ISU New Theater
Indiana State professor of theater Arthur Feinsod may be familiar to United Hebrew Congregation Terre Haute members as author of Coming to See Aunt Sophie, the 2014 play about Jan Karski, honored as Righteous Among the Nations for his efforts to save Polish Jews from the Nazis.
Now, Arthur has directed Clifford Odets’ Awake and Sing!, set to premiere at the New Theater, 538 N 7th St. on the ISU campus. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9 through Friday, Nov. 12, and 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13. Tickets are $10. Call 812-237-3333 for more information.
Sisterhood sets cemetery project, agenda for upcoming meetings
United Hebrew Congregation Terre Haute Sisterhood will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, in the old Jewish section at Highland Lawn Cemetery, to spruce up markers and headstones.
They’ll pay particular attention to graves that no longer receive family visits and will mark each grave with small stones, according to Jewish tradition.
UHC submits application for Sacred Places Indiana grant
United Hebrew Congregation has submitted our application and all necessary documentation for a Sacred Places Indiana planning grant. This $5,000 grant will be applied to a building assessment conducted by an architectural firm (of our choosing) with preservation experience.
There will always be Jewish people in the Wabash Valley contributing to the community. But Temple Israel, our synagogue, is the Jewish Presence: it houses our collective memory and our future collective memory. United Hebrew Congregation and its synagogue are the physical core, as well as the spiritual center of the Wabash Valley’s Jewish Community.
