United Hebrew Congregation Terre Haute and CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center will present a Weekend of Remembrance on Saturday, April 22 and Sunday, April 23, to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
Israel’s Knesset set the Day of Remembrance for the 27th day of Nisan, in 1951, and two years later adopted the title Yom HaShoah ve’Hagevurah: Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust and the Heroism.
This year, the holiday begins at sundown Sunday, April 23.
CANDLES will present A World Erased at 7 p.m. Saturday. Noah Lederman will discuss his book, “A World Erased: A Grandson’s Search for his Family’s Holocaust Secrets” at the museum, 1532 S. Third St. in Terre Haute.
Admission is free. Call 812-234-7881 for details.
United Hebrew Congregation will remember victims of the Holocaust and honor the heroes who saved victims of genocides during an interfaith observance beginning at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 23, in the sanctuary at Temple Israel.
The program will feature soprano Tania Arazi Coambs, a 2015 recipient of the American Prize Chicago Music Theater Award. Coambs made her debut in April at Chicago Symphony Orchestra Hall.
The evening will also include a candle-lighting ceremony in memory of the victims of the Holocaust and a moment of reflection to honor those who chose to help.
The event is free and open to the community.
